Liang Jinde was educated in Singapore and studied with missionary Elijah Bridgman. He was an interpreter for Lin Zexu 林则徐 during the Opium War 1839-1842, aiding Lin to obtain information on Western geography and culture. Liang Jinde worked for a salt merchant and then returned to assist Bridgman with the Delegates’ version of the Bible. At the age of 36 he joined the church. See the story on Liang Fa.
