  上海

Huang Pinsan was born into a rich family from Nanhui 南汇, Jiangsu. He had a Daoist background and acquired some erudition by reading many books.

In 1847, he was hired by the wife of the American Baptist Reverend Tarleton Perry (T.P.) Crawford , Martha Crawford, to teach at her girls school. In 1855, he received baptism from the hands of Reverend Matthew Yates 宴马太 and joined the Baptist church at Laobeimen 老北门in Shanghai, assisting T.P. Crawford and M.T. Yates.

As Rev. Yates and his wife returned home for a furlough, Huang was ordained deacon in 1857. In 1863, Rev. Yates had to work as translator for the American Consulate in order to support himself, as the American Civil War caused economic problems for the missionaries in China. Thus he asked deacon Huang to direct the ecclesiastical work, and as the health of Yates deterioriated, Huang Pinsan was ordained pastor in 1870. He became the first Chinese Southern Baptist pastor in Shanghai and served at the First Baptist church in Shanghai for more than 20 years. Under his direction the church also expanded to Kunshan 昆山, Zhenjiang 镇江, and Suzhou 苏州. He wrote many articles for the Jiaohui xinbao《教会新报》and for the Wanguo gongbao《万国公报》

He died in 1890.
