Huang Mei’s family had emigrated to Sacramento, San Francisco, USA prior to his birth. The American Baptist J. L. Shuck 叔未士 had to return from China due to health reasons, but he preached among the Chinese in the USA, established the Chinese Church in Sacramento, and in 1854, Huang Mei was moved by his words.
Huang was baptized in 1859, and in 1860 (or somewhat later?) he went to Canton 广州, to assist the Baptists Rev. Graves 纪好弼 and Rev. Gaillard 基律, who built a large church at Hui’ailu 惠爱路 Bayuejie 八约街 in 1869. As Graves had to return to the USA due to health problems, he ordained Huang Mei to be pastor and to continue the work in Canton (1870). Being one of the first Chinese pastors of the Baptists, Huang Mei greatly helped the development of the Baptist communities in Guangdong and Guangxi. Pastor Huang Mei died in August 1874.
