Adam Jingjing

Persian author in the East Syrian Church [Church of the East]

Adam Jingjing seems to have been a Persian priest or monk. His name is found in a Syriac inscription on the Nestorian Stele of Xi’an, which was erected in 781. According to the inscription, Adam was a “presbyter, chorepiscopuo [chorbishop] and papas of China.” He wrote at least some of the text on the stele and allegedly translated 30 books of the Syrian Church into Chinese.

[Note: A chorbishop was, depending on the era, either an auxiliary bishop or the chief presbyter, subject to the bishop of the diocese.]
