Fan Zimei

(T.M. Fan, Fan Bihui, Fan Yi, 范子美)
1866 ~ 1939

Born in Suzhou, Fan Zimei in his early years became famous as a "young prodigy" in the study of the Confucian classics. In middle age, he received the Gospel and became a Christian through association with American missionary Young J. Allen. He became a well-known journalist as editor of Allen's influential Globe magazine for ten years.

Fan Zimei joined the publications department of the YMCA in 1911 and served for twenty-five years as chief editor of its two successive monthly magazines, Progress and Association Progress. With his profound writing ability, he educated and inspired youth according to the YMCA's "four-fold program" (body, mind, spirit, social relations). In 1935, at the age of 70, Mr. Fan retired and led a life of seclusion as the country was engulfed by war. Eulogies at his death stressed that he had kept the Christian teachings in his heart, remaining a devoted believer into old age.

This pioneering Christian journalist navigated the changing political tides between two centuries and shaped the interaction between Eastern and Western civilizations. His mental outlook passed from old, traditional Confucian knowledge to new Western knowledge and then to a Christian belief that also reflected Confucian concerns for society.
